Problems in Particulate Flow

Part A -- Flow Regimes

Abstract: This article describes the four types of flow observed for particulate materials - repose, core, mass and bed flow. It is the first of several articles describing particulate flow behaviour, problems that arise in bulk solids flow in industrial settings, and the solutions that have been devised to address these problems.

Lyn Bates is Managing Director of Ajax Equipment Ltd., a company that specialises in the design and supply of Solids Handling and Processing plants. He is active on many technical committees and has headed numerous initiatives and working parties on particulate solid operations. He has written over 100 technical papers and books on "Segregation", "Screw Feeders", and "Specification of Bulk Solids". He lectures regularly and also contributes to Web forums. He has designed various powder testing devices and is an innovator for a number of flow modifying techniques for bins and screws.

Lyn brings a light touch to the subject with contributions such as "The Flow Commandments" and founding "The Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Hoppers". He recently received the I.Mech.E. award for "Excellence in Solids Handling"
