Abstract: Random phenomena are commonly encountered in the chemical industry, so statistics is required in many applications. Basic statistical methods are often sufficient, but the problems are frequently ill-posed and data may be limited, missing, uncertain, or wrong. Several examples from practice, including process capability, controller performance monitoring, statistical process control rules of run analysis, OSHA recordable analysis, minimum cost instrument calibration procedures, regression, and control relevant modeling, will be presented that illustrate typical issues encountered in industrial statistical problems. In addition to the answer to the title question, the first step in every application of statistics will be revealed.
